Recreating Golden Hour
At Studio Clyx, we believe that every photoshoot is a unique story, told through light, shadow, and the expressions of our models. Today, we want to take you behind the scenes of a recent photoshoot with the gorgeous Tiffany, where we recreated golden hour using simple tools available in-house.
Our studio being predominantly a natural light loft space, receives plenty of ambient light through those giant windows. However, there are times when one would need that extra control and direct sun light which might not be present or at the right position during your shoot. Having the right tools will allow you to have ‘sunlight’ even on a dark gloomy day.
Introducing the Dedo L.E.D 90W Bi-Color, equipped with the Dedolight DP1 Projection Attachment and an 85mm lens! To add a creative touch, we used a window gobo with this setup. The gobo helped simulate natural light streaming through a window, casting gentle, patterned shadows that added depth and interest to the background. This technique not only enhanced the visual appeal of the shot but also contributed to a more intimate and authentic atmosphere.
To complement the main light, we employed a beauty dish with a diffusion sock as our fill light. The beauty dish is a staple in portrait photography, known for its ability to produce soft, flattering light. The diffusion sock further softened the light, ensuring that it wrapped gently around the model’s face, reducing harsh shadows and creating a smooth, even glow.
On the model’s right side, we positioned a V-flat. This simple yet effective tool served as a reflector, bouncing light back onto the model and filling in any remaining shadows. The result was a well-balanced image with a natural, three-dimensional feel.
Here's a simplified diagram to give you a better understanding of our setup:
Creating the perfect shot is about more than just the technical details; it’s about how these elements come together to tell a story. In this shoot, the combination of the Dedo L.E.D with the window gobo, the beauty dish, and the V-flat worked harmoniously to highlight the model’s features while maintaining a soft, elegant aesthetic.
We hope this glimpse into our process inspires you to explore and experiment with your lighting setups. At Studio Clyx, we’re always excited to see how different photographers bring their visions to life in our space. Whether you're a seasoned professional or just starting out, our studio offers the perfect environment to create your next masterpiece.
